Handling stress during Grad school

Graduate studies can be one of the most challenging experiences in your academic journey. The demands range from meeting up with coursework and research to balancing personal commitments and part-time jobs, stress often becomes a constant companion. Managing stress is a fundamental requirement for sailing through the deep waters of graduate studies. Based on my personal experience while I was a Master and a PhD student, I have made this writeup to help someone sailing these paths now.

1. Recognize and acknowledge it.

It is commonly said that one of the greatest deceptions in Life is self-deception. Graduate school can be a wild ride, full of excitement but also a lot of pressure. Balancing research, classes, teaching responsibilities, part-time jobs and social life can lead to some serious stress. It is important to recognize the major source of where your stress is coming from and devise a plan on how to resolve it.

2. Create  and maintain an efficient Daily Routine

Having a set routine can really help keep stress at bay. This point seems normal but the routine I am referring to here is putting first things first. Prioritise your priorities. Statistics have shown that a lack of well-defined daily goals and objectives is a recipe for a chaotic day. Try to carve out specific times for studying, attending lectures, and working on research. Don’t forget to schedule breaks for meals and some fun! A regular schedule boosts productivity and makes your day feel more organized and less chaotic.

4. Keeping fit

Staying active is a fantastic way to relieve stress. Whether you prefer jogging, swimming, or playing a sport, getting your body moving releases endorphins that can lift your mood. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days to keep those good vibes flowing. All these activities help to build a positive physio-psychosocial energy that greatly helps to alleviate stress.

5. Reach out for Support

A problem shared is a problem half-solved. Don't be shy to seek out for help. Reach out to classmates, friends, or mentors who get what you’re dealing with in grad school. Sharing your experiences and getting advice can lighten the load and help you feel more connected.

6. Use Resources at your Uni

Most universities have a bunch of resources available to help students manage stress. Most universities have resources designed to help graduate students thrive, but many students don’t take full advantage of them. Get to your Uni website and look up for counselling services. Counsellors at the Uni are well-trained professionals and from my experiences are very helpful in providing guidance on how to handle stress and maintain focus during grad school.
